Davis reaches last eight in Germany

The St Leonards potter won four matches in European Tour event three, the Ruhr Open, before being edged out by the eventual champion. Davis began with a clinical 4-0 whitewash of Belgian amateur Alain Van Der Steen in round one, knocking in breaks of 93, 70 and 74 along the way. The world number 19 then produced a brilliant comeback from 3-0 down to win 4-3 against Irish potter Fergal O’Brien, who had knocked out world champion Stuart Bingham in round one. Runs of 56 and 80 appeared to put 30th-ranked O’Brien in command, but Davis turned things around helped by breaks of 73 and 80. Davis made it a hat-trick of wins on Friday by seeing off 28th-ranked Ali Carter 4-2. After losing the opening frame, Davis won the next two without conceding a point thanks to runs of 132 and 83. European Tour event two winner Carter levelled at 2-2, but didn’t pot a ball in the next and Davis sealed victory in frame six despite Carter’s 56. Davis overcame Belgian young gun Luca Brecel by the same score in the last 16 on Sunday morning. The first two frames were shared before Davis rattled through the next two with breaks of 72 and 130. World number 41 Brecel edged the fifth, but Davis won an equally tight sixth to get over the line. Davis lost the first two frames of his quarter-final against 49th-ranked Rory McLeod despite a 58 break in the second, but conceded just five points in the next two, fashioning a 69 in the fourth. McLeod took the fifth to lead again, yet didn’t score a point in the sixth as Davis made an 81 to level at 3-3. Davis looked set to clinch the decider as well only to miss the final yellow and McLeod stepped in to complete a 4-3 victory. McLeod went on to clinch a title carrying ranking points for the first time, beating Chinese cueman Tian Pengfei 4-2 in the final. It was Davis’s second quarter-final appearance of the season following an identical result at last month’s Shanghai Masters and he also reached the last 16 of European Tour event two. He moves up to 16th on the European Tour order of merit. Jimmy Robertson, meanwhile, was narrowly beaten in round two of the same tournament. The Bexhill cueman saw off Mark Joyce 4-1 before being edged out 4-3 by Andrew Higginson. World number 45 Robertson won the first three frames against 46th-ranked Joyce, knocking in breaks of 51 and 56 in the third. Joyce pulled one back aided by a run of 55 in the fourth, but Robertson comfortably won the fifth to seal victory. Robertson didn’t score a point, however, in the opening two frames against world number 51 Higginson, who fired in breaks of 60 and 76. Robertson edged the third with a run of 61 to a Higginson 55 only for Higginson to clinch the next for a 3-1 lead.
