Ewhurst Green, Cripps Corner and Staplecross village voice
It was a busy time in the parish with an Art Show embracing the whole of last weekend, a Race Night and the planting of the Diamond Jubilee trees.
he Art Show drew a steady stream of visitors and the combination of Staplecross and Hollington art classes tutored by Hilary Ganly meant a wide range of pictures on show. Those regulars who have attended these exhibitions over the years reckoned it was an even higher standard and there were plenty of compliments of the artists’ work. Hilary estimated that 10% were sold of those pictures for sale.

Hide AdThe Race Night held at the Staplecross Club was a fundraising evening held jointly by the Ewhurst and Staplecross Bonfire Society and Staplecross Bowls Club and was considered very successful. The event raised £600 which will be divided between the two organisations. Brian Scowen paid tribute to all those involved and especially to Staplecross Social Club for the use of its facilities. He said it was good to unite different clubs in a social evening and get everyone involved.
The Bowls Club is holding a New Members evening tonight (Friday) at 6pm at the clubhouse in Northiam Road, Staplecross. This is an opportunity for people to see whether they would enjoy playing the game, or even to join as a social member.
On Saturday morning (an appropriate choice of date being The Queen’s birthday) “Diamond Birthday” Pauline Scowen planted a rowan tree on the green outside the village hall. With the tree duly planted people moved on to the Herdman Field where Micky Seymour, who with her husband will be celebrating their Diamond Wedding in July, planted an English oak. Unfortunately husband John was unable to attend the planting, but Micky’s spadework and Wally Close ensuring the tree stayed upright, was assisted by Pauline. Dave Perkins, MBE, who has done so much for the Herdman Field, brought out the champagne and the “Diamonds” were toasted, along with the trees. Just as the planting was almost completed an overhead violent storm erupted along with heavy rain and hail and everyone ran for cover. So much hail engulfed Ewhurst Green that large patches remained the next morning.
The Parish Tree Warden Councillor Maggie Whitaker had organised the purchase and all the various needs new trees require and with plenty of rain the trees should do well.

It is amazing how many motorists cannot read. It is usually the speed signs, but the latest are those ignoring the “road closed except for access” with a barrier halfway across the road at the Cripps Corner end of the Junction Road while a bridge is being repaired. Residents in the southern section of Junction Road are astounded at the number of vehicles, including the driver of a large lorry, who ignore the diversion signs and continue through the half barrier, resulting in wasting time and fuel as they have to turn around and return to Cripps Corner. It could be some eight weeks before the road reopens – but watch this space!
