LETTER: Remembering civilian victims

It was encouraging to read the Herald's report last week of progress towards a new memorial to Eastbourne's civilian victims of enemy bombing in World War Two. Your supportive leader was also appreciated.

The report mentioned that the planning application for the memorial, within the Wish Tower moat, was made by the Eastbourne Society. This is indeed indicated in the Design and Access Statement accompanying the application. At the time that was written the Society, which is a registered charity, was prepared to act as the vehicle for the project, but potential complications were identified which made such involvement inadvisable.

Instead an independent charity – the Eastbourne Civilian War Memorial Trust – is in the process of being established by Mr John Boyle, who is leading the memorial project. When all planning issues have been resolved, the Trust will launch a public appeal to cover the building costs.
