Hide AdDuffy, 28, has dropped down the pecking order at Brighton and has been the subject of intense transfer speculation north of the border throughout the summer.
The Ireland international is a boyhood Celtic fan and it's been reported that the club were keen on a £2m season-long loan deal.
The manner of the defeat to Ferencvárosi highlighted the need for a player such as Duffy but dropping out of Europe's elite competition could have serious financial implications for the club.
With West Ham and West Brom still keen to land Duffy, sections of Celtic fans now fear the move is in doubt.

Hide Ad@Gunny2323: No chance we’re paying £2m for shane duffy on loan now.
@InmyeyesM: Forget about Shane Duffy come on down Scott McKenna
@EvanWynne9: Why would edouard want to stay now ? Why would shane Duffy come we haven’t even champions league to offer them
@Murphy40194390: I understand and agree with the idea that it's all about the league, but that result puts the #10iar in real trouble. It could mean #OdsonneEdouard leaving imminently and makes signings like #ShaneDuffy unlikely. #CelticFC are at a crossroads.
@Joshy_1967: Shane Duffy ain’t happening no more.
@MarkDevlin93: Duffy+Celtic out of the CL=Scott McKenna
